Brain Boosters for Writing Articles
by MaryJo Wagner, Ph.D.

It’s a no brainer that you need your brain to write articles. But did you know that you can easily make your brain work better. And when you increase brain functioning, you write articles more quickly. You write better articles.

Maybe somebody told you you’re left-brain. It’s often an insult because you aren’t understanding what they’re saying or don’t agree with how you’re doing something. You want to read the directions first. They don’t.

Or perhaps, you think you’re right-brain.  Again, it’s often an insult because you aren’t understanding what they’re saying or don’t agree with how you’re doing something. You don’t’ want to read directions first. They do.

Time to put an end to this nonsense. Nobody is left brain or right brain.  That’s like saying you only have half a brain. Not true. But we all have a brain dominance, meaning we use more of the left side of the frontal lobes of the neocortex. Or more of the right side.

However, you wouldn’t even be able to read your best friend’s blog post if you didn’t use both sides of your brain.

If you can't read another word without finding out whether you're left-brain or right-brain dominant, you can take a nifty quiz to answer your question.

So what on earth does this have to do with article marketing? With writing articles?  Actually, has a lot to do with both the quality of your articles and the speed with which you write them.  Do you get ideas for articles but have trouble finding the right words. Or can’t seem to organize your article very well. (You could, of course, use templates to solve that problem.)

Or do you often draw a blank coming up with ideas. Now if someone would just tell you what to write about, give you a few ideas, you’d be off and running.

That’s the difference between extreme left or right-brain dominance. It’s just not very efficient.

The good news is that you can change your brain and it’s really easy. (So simple, you can show it to your kids.)

But first before I tell you how to change your brain, let's take a look at how the frontal lobes of the brain's neocortex work. This is the part of the brain right behind your forehead. The left side and the right side are connected by a fibrous band in the middle called the "corpus callosum."

In order to use both sides of the brain, brain cells on the left side have to be connected to brain cells on the right side. In other words, the electrical charge between brain cells has to pass across the corpus callosum.

O.K. that's the theory part. Of course, the brain is way more complicated than this but I’m trying to make it simple for you so we can get on with the how-to part.

Now the action part. How do you get this neuronal pattern? How do you get these synapses across the corpus callosum?  It's really quite simple. Every time you cross your body's midline, you make neuronal patterns between the right and left side.

Right-brain dominant article marketers are now able to use more of their left brain.  And left-brain dominant article writers able to use more of their right brain.

Yes, you read it correctly. Nothing more to increasing brain function than doing movements that force you to cross your body’s midline. For example, let’s pretend you’re right-handed. Now put your pens and pencils on the left side of your desk. You have to cross the mid-line to pick up your pen.

Even better, when you go out for your brisk walk, swing your arms across your body as you walk.  (You are taking a brisk-walk break aren’t you?)  When you come back to your desk, you’ll be smarter and more alert.

That’s all there is to increasing brain function. You do need to be aware, making sure you’re crossing the center mid-line many times throughout the day.

It’s such an important skill and habit that kindergarten teachers help kids learn to cross the midline so they can learn to read and write.  Now as adults, we’re sitting at our computers all day long which usually keeps us from crossing the midline.
